Watercolor of the Casa São Roque Fountain
last update: 08/12/2025This watercolor of the Casa São Roque Fountain reveals one of my newest passions in Porto. This spot is, without a doubt, one of my favorite parks—a not-so-large space but filled with pleasant little nooks, including the fountain with its jets, for example, which already warranted an Urban Sketch on a previous visit.
This time, I felt the need to make this post to showcase the illustration I did of the old fountain in the Casa São Roque garden. I say “old” because, after my first Urban Sketch there, it was completely restored!

The fountain completely new, absolutely gorgeous.
Now, on my most recent visit, I found the fountain completely new, absolutely gorgeous. The restoration brought back all its good looks, revealing details that time had corroded. It is truly beautiful, but I confess I missed the climbing plants that covered it. They gave life and that magical air to the place, composing the illustration in a unique way.
This illustration of mine is a testament that change is constant in Porto, but the beauty of what was seen is registered forever. I hope to return soon to Parque São Roque for the camellia festival and make new drawings.
Returning to the hidden fountain: it is located on a mezzanine in front of the House, towards the end of the garden, near the room where some wine tastings take place. It immediately captivated me the first time I saw it, due to its aged and worn appearance. The tiles were missing, the paint was very worn, and that patina that time imprints on walls was its main beauty. I stayed there for a good hour, listening to music on my headphones and enjoying that refuge all to myself. This detailed observation is essential for an Urban Sketcher’s work.
