Mansion Gate in Porto on a Street of Fortunes
2024-08-03
A mansion gate on Rua Dom João IV, here in Porto. PoSK likes to put together meetups that are, let’s say, themed, and this one had us drawing the mansions along the street.
There’s the Spanish Consulate right there on that same street, plus a few other really beautiful buildings. But I went with the gate at number 304, an imposing one, well kept, and true to the emblematic style of that era.
A street of fortunes and wrought iron
That was an era when either money was flowing pretty freely, or the skilled labor needed to make pieces this detailed was a lot cheaper. These days, just restoring a gate like that one turns into a small fortune, which only makes it clearer how much hidden wealth these streets of Porto carry in every bit of wrought iron and carved stone.
It was a good PoSK meetup, one of those afternoons where you end up staying way longer than planned, just from having so many details to take in on every facade.
