Praça do Comércio in a Last Watercolor of Lisbon
2022-09-05
This is my last watercolor of Lisbon, at Praça do Comércio, right in front of the Arco da Rua Augusta. Behind it, the scaffolding sprouting up on every corner of the city.
It’s not just Lisbon caught up in this rebuilding pushed by the real estate market. Porto is the same way, in a rush to deliver places as fast as possible for real estate funds to cash in on. All before that market bursts somehow.
Well, but I’m here to talk about other things. About how this trip to Lisbon was different. I came with my daughter, we saw plenty of new things, and I ran into an old friend.
I ended up changing the way I saw Lisbon a bit. It really does have a much more cosmopolitan feel than Porto, livelier and more bohemian. I’ll be back more often, for sure.
Especially because there are still so many places I haven’t drawn. I want to go back and have that experience of drawing on location, feeling the moment and the place.
