A Modernist House Under Renovation in Porto

watercolor of a modernist house with a rounded balcony, in Porto

A Modernist House, this is another watercolor from the PoSK meetups. This one was from meetup 109, which happened on Avenida Marechal Gomes da Costa. We met up in a square with a monument honoring Porto’s businessmen, made by the Portuguese sculptor José Rodrigues.

Looking around the square and its surroundings, a renovation that looked half abandoned caught my eye, on the corner. It was a big modernist house, probably from the 40s or 50s. It had a big rounded balcony out front, that reminded me of the bow of a ship. I found myself imagining that balcony with its cinematic parties and Porto’s high society guests.

Now, it’s going through a remodel that I sincerely hope keeps the spirit of the place.

Update

Last week, I passed by there after a really long time. The house is still there, now a big office space, but it kept the original architecture. Good thing too.

But the square lost its sculpture. Oh well, you can’t win them all.
